Local Hadspen boy Ritchie Porte is on the start list for his Team Saxo Bank for the upcoming 6 stage Tour of the Basque Country (Spanish: Vuelta Ciclista al PaĆs Vasco) starting on April 5.
Porte has also made the provisional team list for the first of this years Grand Tours, the Giro d italia in May. The winner of the last two Basque tours was Alberto Contador who also won the 2007 & 2009 Tour De France.
Flowery Gully's Wes Sulzberger who is currently Tasmania's most successful pro cyclist will also saddle up in the basque tour for his French team Francaise de jour. Sulzberger looks likely to be the first Tasmanian to saddle up for the Tour de France since Michael Wilson in ??1989 who last time I looked owns the appropriately named "Velo" winery in Legana

Good on you Richie!
ReplyDeleteYes Matt it will be interesting to see how Richie goes at the Basque. He just rode the paris-nice and that was a very tough course.
ReplyDeleteRichie is so new to this level so I'm not sure how much his team would be expecting from in this race. He is a natural climber and is suited to the European Tour. But he is up against the best of the best and god knows what else.
